Subject: TO Tommy: What was it like?

Hello Nasheka Powell and Vince Damin. This is Tom Holloway,
the LONDON SCHOOLBOY on the panel.

----------------------------------

>1. How was the curiculum in school? For example, what subjects did the
>students study?

While I was in a Primary (Elementary) School it was much
the same as it is now I think, but in 1944 I changed to
a Grammar School (High School?) and that was QUITE different.
We all had to do 2 years of compulsory Latin to start with
and by modern standards the discipline was far stricter.

>2. What was the biggest meal you and your family ate? For example, for
>holidays did your family make anything special?

Yes. For Christmas we would save up and buy - CHICKEN! It
was horribly expensive, of course, but even better than my
other special favourite, rabbit stew.

>3.What was life like not being very well to do? Did it effect your
childhood?

I'm not sure how to answer this. We didn't have a motor
car, or a fridge, or a telephone, there was no such thing
as telly of course, and there were no ready-made convenience
foods like 'pizza' (unless you count fish and chips as a
convenience food). But we were quite well-to-do!? We had
a radio and my family could afford to buy me a bicycle when
I got to 11 years old. Yes; I would say we were quite well off!

>Would it of made a difference in your daily life if you had more money?

Probably, but that's always the case isn't it. Very rich
people could probably get certain foods "under the counter"
I expect. But I don't think there was a LOT of that sort
of thing - we were all quite thankful for what we had.
