Linda, if your students have an interest in writing to Gene Halski
through me, he's also interested. His story: He was born in Ukraine
in 1919. Went through the starvation Stalin induced. Was drafted by
the Russian army and sent to fight in Finland. Then to fight against
Germany. Was in several German POW camps until liberated. Then
opted not to return to Ukraine since the Russians had control and
there was no freedom. Waited in a d.p. camp until a sponsor from the
U.S. agreed to bring him/family here. This point of view may not be
appropriate for your studies.
