Last night on the World Service (radio) there was a programme about
Thessaloniki (in Greece) a town built by Alexander the Great's
brother-in-law. The original cosmopolitan population (it is a
seaport) included Jewish Greeks, augmented in 1492 by Jews fleeing
from the Spanish Inquisition (while Columbus was heading for the
Caribbean).

In April 1941 the Germans took the town. Along with the Jewish
Community Council, one of the first to be "arrested" (never seen
again) was the owner of the Jewish bookshop. His grandson was
interviewed for the broadcast.
