I was in elementary school in Canada, during the war. Many items were
rationed. We were given ration books & when the stamps ran out, you had to
wait until new books of tickets arrived. Some of the items included sugar,
meat, butter & gasoline. We went door to door collecting tin foil, that was
used in cigarette packs. Scrap metal was also gathered. As a school class,
we went out into the woods & gathered milk weed pods. The white material in
the pods was used in the manfacture of parachutes. It was a sad time,
because we were always thinking about our relatives, away in a foreign
country fighting.
Rationing us did help the war effort, as food & materials were used
overseas. When it was announced that the war was over, church bells rang,
car horns blew & people ran out into the street, yelling & jumping up &
down!
