Hello Nicholas - thanks for your interesting questions.
I'm the LONDON SCHOOLBOY on the panel, so I don't have
many answers for you.

>Q:Which countries were the most successful at smuggling out their Jewish
>  citizens?

I was aware of Jewish boys in my school that had arrived
here speaking no English. Two brothers from Belgium and
an older boy from Austria who (I think) had been here for
2 or 3 years.

>Q:Are the black and white stripes that are used in prisons today come from
> the clothing guards and prisons wore in the camps?

I always thought that those clothes were made from the
cheap 'ticking' that were used to make mattress covers.
The cloth would be extremely stiff and easy to see from
a distance, making escape more difficult.

>Q:Who decided the punishment for war criminals after the war was over?

A Tribunal of Judges from Allied countries met at Nuremberg
and after 12 months passed the death sentence on 12 of the
22 high-ranking National Socialists. Other tribunals in
other countries met at the same time and in all, 2,000 were
executed for the following crimes....

* plotting aggressive war
* civilian atrocities
* genocide
* slave labour
* looting
* abuse of prisoners-of-war

>Q:What methods did people use to locate lost relatives at the conclusion
>of the war?

I think Jan Mokrzycki and others will be able to help you
with that.  See www.rmplc.co.uk/eduweb/sites/chatback/~janm.html
