Military service leaves people with many problems as well as some benefits.
One of the things it helps people to realize is that live in other areas is
different from what home is. (perceptions will vary on the goodness or
quality of the life).
I'd like to recommend that you read a book by a WWII nurse who served in
Africa and then in Italy and Germany. This book uses many of her letters
written during the war and will give you a view of the lives and the
activities of the people in the military and North Africa. This will help
you to see that the world was very different at that time than we realize
from our life who is distant in both time and space. We must be careful in
judging those from other t ime periods and experiences by today's standards.
As long as you are search for meaning, you should keep searching. I also
want to encourage you to search the records of the unit through the National
Archives. The book I mentiond is BEDPAN COMMANDO by June Wandrey 1989
