Hi, Darrell: So glad of your interest in the experiences of people like your
dad. Mine were moderate - serving in an Engineer Combat Battakion which saw
little combat (thank Heaven!). We were eventually assigned to General
Patton's headquarters in various towns in Germany, one of them Regensburg.
Like one of your correspondents,
I too remember General George Patton. One day, sitting in back of an Army 2
1/2 ton truck (troop carrier) , we saw a shiny jeep and a person with a
shiny face under a shiny helmet with four or five stars coming up fast
behinds us. A 50 caliber machinegun was mounted on the front. We quickly
slowed down, got over to the side, and let the General speed by!

I later served with Military Government in Austria, a very interesting 8
months before being shipped home.

I'd also be interested in hearing from one of your correspondents who signed
herself "Sally" and whose screen name seemed to be jhart. That's my name too.
