Your letter about WWII and your father's reluctance to discuss his experi=
ences is not too unusual for many of those who were in the midst of the f=
ighting. I served in North Africa and Sicily before our unit was sent to =
England to prepare for the D-Day invasion. Since I was with the 313th Tro=
op Carrier Group my experiences were limited to dropping paratroopers, ru=
nning resupply missions and evacuating the wounded...a far cry from the h=
orrible experience of the fighting going on on the ground. During the inv=
asion of Sicily I had the interesting experience of encountering Gen Geor=
ge Patton in one of his more raucous moods. We were transporting wounded =
from the front in Sicily to a hospital in North Africa when the incident =
occurred. He gave several of us a "chewing out" for not properly coming t=
o attention and saluting him.

After the invasion of southern Italy the 313th TCGp moved to a airfield n=
ear the western end of Sicily where we continued to fly resupply missions=
and evacuate the wounded. That winter we moved to a station near Grantha=
m England and prepared for the invasion across the English Channel.

I am now 80 years old so many of the specifics of the War are beginning t=
o escape me. I have recently begun trying to record some of my thoughts a=
nd experiences of the WWII era for my children and grandchildren so I wa=
s pleased to see your e mail letter about your father and your concern. I=
would be happy to share any of my experiences with you.
