Bonbing Targets

In a recent conversation, the follow question came up for which, I did
not have a clear answer on.

   Since the Americans and British Air Forces, with there B-17's,
Lancaster's, etc, carried out heavy bombing raids on Germany, why didn't
they ever consider one of the horrible death camps as a target and turn
it into a pile of rubble ?? Yes, many innocent might have perished but
might it have saved many many more ??

   Any thoughts or information ?
