If someone said the Holocaust was exaggerated or made up, what would I reply?
The the speaker did not know the facts.
1. Germany kept good records as did several of the other nations and we have
these records which include order to move and execute people and plans for
the various camps.
2. When the German war criminals were put on trial the leaders of the Nazi
Party and heads of the camps did not deny that the events took place.
Instead they said that they were following orders to do these things.
3. Too many survivors have told similar stories. This large a number could
not have gotten together and made up what to tell. The stories of the
survivors from various locations tell use what happened. the fact that many
could not tell their stories until many years later is a result of PTSD and
this fits with what we know about true events of trama.
4. Many soldiers from various nations were witnesses as were the nurses who
served in the military and worked in the camps after they were liberated.
5. The pictures were taken by the U. S. military to document what they saw.
This was the assignment of a number of individuals and there is written
record of the assignment as well as their pictures.
6. Lastly, I add that General Eisenhower went to see the camps and made the
statement that he did so so that in the future no one could say that it was
not true.
That is what I would say. Next I would ask you to answers some questons for
yourself: I would then ask you to questions the motives of those who claim
that the Holocaust did not happen. Are they still trying to blame their
problems on those that Hitler tried to blame? or are they willing to try to
work with others to solve human problems to the advantage of all people? Are
they trying to preach hate of fellow humans? Do they think that anyone group
is superior over a particular other? Are these the kinds of people who will
make the world better for all people or would these people want privileges
for their own group of friends? What does democracy mean? What are the goals
of democracy? Are these people believers in democracy or privileges for the
few?
The most likely one word might be "continuous." However, one word can not
describe WWII it is much too complex a situation with to many implications
for the rest of the century.
