Doodlebugs

Please forgive me, but I just had to ask that question. Where I grew up in
Southern South Carolina, ant lions were referred to as "doodlebugs" Many a
playful moment was spent as a child stirring their little traps to catch the
doodlebug. Quite a difference from the horrible rocket bombs rained upon
Britain. It still amazes me that the British people underwent all the
horrors of war as they did and stood as the last bastion against the Nazi
onslaught before America entered the War. It is mind boggling that the
people suffered as they did, yet remained united, repeatedly dug themselves
out and doggedly persisted in fighting and manufacturing war materials in
such adverse conditions. I'm not sure enough Americans fully realize that if
it were not for Britain, Hitler would surely have attacked the United States
on these shores. Thanks for clarifying the doodle bugs and I can just
imagine some of the other names by which they were known.
