The buzz bomb, V1 or doodlebug, was a pilotless airplane (or flying bomb)
powered by a small engine. I think it had a guidance system
which included a timer to cut off the engine at the desired point.
(Compare it to the cruise missile, a rocket-powered bomb launched from
an airplane.)
The V2 was a rocket-powered guided missile developed by Werner von Braun
and Walter Dornburger.
(Von Braun, of course, later came to the USA and
worked on the Apollo moon rockets in Huntsville, Alabama until his death.)
The V1 and V2 can be seen at the RAF Museum, outside of London.
There is a whole hangar devoted to the Battle of Britain. It is worth
the trip. (It should not be confused with the War Museum in London.>
The moon rockets can be seen at the space museum in Huntsville, Alabama.
Young people might enjoy a novel about the Battle of Britain called
Piece of Cake. I think it is by Derek Robinson. He stays pretty close
to the facts, in this novel about a group of RAF pilots and their fate.
