Gene Halski asked me to reply to you about his education about war.
But first I need to tell you he was born in Ukraine in 1919. When he
was 21 he was drafted into the Russian army. He went only to
elementary school because his family were considered "Enemies of the
People" because they would not cooperate with the communist regime.
He could not be educated from that point on. Before he had to leave
school, he said they did not talk about WWI. They did talk about
reasons to hate czarism and capitalism however.
About WWII -- he was in it as a soldier until he was captured and
held in a variety of p-o-w camps, when he wasn't escaping. He said
at least one of the places the prisoners were kept in Russia was a
school. So the students were bumped out.
