I'ld like to give few more details about Sinclair's "discovery
of a castle high on the banks of the Danube". I have found the following
data in the book "OESTERREICH - Schloesser, Burgen, Kloester" by Hilmar
Schmitt & Wilkin Spitta, published by Ringier @ Co.AG, Muenchen/Zuerich
1981, ISBN 3 85859 148-3.
< On Danube's left bank and downstream of towns Vichtenstein and
Engelszell there is the site of castle RANNARIEDL (actually RANNARIEGEL).
The castle is on top of narow ridge overlooking the river Ranna's valley
at its confluence with Danube. [RIEGEL means BOLT i.e. RANNARIEGEL means
Ranna's bolt.] From there one can see (and visit) the ruin FALKENSTEIN
with its Tower of Wells and which had protected several springs there.
The castle Rannariedl has been mentioned first time in 1280. The
castle courtyard has nice arcaded collonade from 16th century and one
round tower of later times. Today, one cannot visit castle Rannariedl.
Now, there is a bridge (instead of an old ferry) over river Danube from
which a road leads into MUEHLVIERTEL (the region of Upper Austria North
of Danube). On the way one can visit the near-by castle of MARSBACH
mentioned first time in 1198. >

Addenda to my MEMORIES.E21 of 11 Apr 1996:
1. - The City of Innsbruck is located on both banks of river INN.
2. - The river ENNS was _the_border_ between the western Allies'
occupation zones (American and British) and the Russian one.
On its banks there are cities like Steyr and Enns just short
of river's confluence into Danube.
