I find the story of Eugene Halski utterly fascinating. There is so
much stated "between the lines," as it were. It reminds me, once
again, of what I have often thought about the War -- how fortunate I
was to have been born where I was -- in California -- and to have
been sent to the ETO rather than the Pacific. My Army service was a
breeze compared to others' elsewhere in the world, filled with minor
annoyances and inconveniences and just a modicum of danger. How
quixotic fate is!
