Oh - remember butter??? BUTTER! The ration allowance was for a couple of
ounces a week - oh, the day it was available was heaven! It was the only
day we didn't have to eat that white grease, colored with the separate
package of yellow dye (to mix or not to mix, that is the question?) - early
margarine.... YUCK!

I would cover the slice of bread or crackers with butter - Mother would
scream "I can't see any bread through the butter! Take some off!", so I'd
dutifully move it around, from one side to the other - but really, really
try not to remove any of the heavenly butter.

My cousins also hated the marge, so their mother, instead, would sprinkle
some cocoa powder on a slice of bread - and hey, presto! a chocolate
sandwich! What could be more luxurious?
