Hello Christopher -- you ask..... > I just wanted to know if there were any bad effects > of evacuation (Apart from the obvious about the families) Taken as a whole I think there were NOT bad effects, but you are likely to get many different answers. It was quite an extraordinary thing to attempt, and it was very well executed. As far as I know Germany had nothing like it, families having to shift for themselves, rather than having a national scheme (see Geseke's story "Love is to send away" about the bombing of Hamburg at http://timewitnesses.org/english/~geseke.html ). Just think of it though -- one million children taken from their parents and given to total strangers, all in the space of a few weeks! Imagine trying that nowadays! For more information you might try searching our archives at http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/memories.html and if you want some "pictures that tell a story" there is an excellent website at http://www.sol.co.uk/s/StThomas/evacuees_photos.htm =============== Tom Holloway tom.holloway@u3a.org.uk tom@worldu3a.org http://timewitnesses.org 01926-771772 ------------------------ Yahoo!
