Dear Bella,
I was rather younger, only 5 at the outbreak of the war, therefore did not
take part in the Uprising.
In fact I was very lucky as just a week propr to it my grandmother decided
to go to her villa east of Warsaw for a short break. We were there when the
uprising started, as it wasonly some 12 miles east of the City we could just
hear the firing and see some smoke. Within three or four days the Russian
(Soviet) troops arrived, we were turfed out of the villa which they
occupied. Within days they moved to the Vistula which bisects Warsaw and
stayed on the eastern side, just watchuing as the fighters and the civilian
population of Warsaw were slaughtered and the city burned to the ground.
I was the only "man" in the family and took gran and the three other women
in charge! We moved north where I and one of the women found employment on a
tomatoe farm, collecting tomatoes which were meant for the markets in
Warsaw, but the markets were not there.
For our work we were given roof overhead in a stable and some food
supplemented by any nomber of toms--and I still like them.
After several weeks the Russians moved west again taking Warsaw and we went
"home". What was my grans flat on the east side of Warsaw actually stood so
we had somewhere to stay, it is not possible to describe what the west side
of Warsaw looked like, it was just one huge ruin, yet people immediately
lived there and set about rebuilding their beloved city.
I was very lucky, some six month later after the end of the war my mother
was freed by Americans from the Ravensbruck concentration camp, came back
for me and took me with her first to Germany and then with the Polish Forces
to England.

Hope this is what you wanted

best wishes

Jan
