I used to go to dances at Kensington Town Hall quite regularly and apart
from the revolving glass ball near the ceiling I don't recall any
decorations.

But don't give up! How about the refreshment stand? Rock cakes, Fish-paste
sandwiches, portions of Beetroot Pudding (you'll get some ideas if you
click-on or go-to http://timewitnesses.org/english/food/ ) -- and make sure
there are no plastic materials in evidence. That means no paper plates;
sandwiches should be wrapped in brown paper or grease-proof paper and
everything laid out on enamelled tin trays. No alcohol either -- just tea or
coffee.

Have fun!
