Perspective comes with time. It's very easy to have 20-20 hindsight when
looking back at Germany in the 1930s, but not so easy when the bands are
playing and suddenly there's a new emphasis on the Great Outdoors and making
a fresh start after the humiliation and economic horror of the 1920s.

I'm quite sure that good man the late Professor Walter Felscher was as
liberal as you or I -- but go to our archives at
http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/memories.html and read his reflections
on Hitler Jugend indoctrination and the optimism of the pre-war years.

And isn't there an upsurge of nationalism now in the US? Who can say with
certainty _now_ what the long-term effects of our involvement in
Iran/Afghanistan/Iraq are likely to be?
