I remember collecting aluminum foil at that time and I'm sure that's what the
"silver paper" was. There was a shortage of metals due to the war and 
everyone was to collect aluminum foil for the war effort.
I remember in the first or second grade a veteran came to class to 
show something that was used by nurses for injured soldiers.. I 
imagine it was some kind of ointment in an soft aluminum tube. This 
was to get us to collect the aluminum. This happened in Wichita, 
Kansas, but I imagine it happened all over the country.
