I've come up with several reasons, but I need a reference that could explain society, at large, for me. For instance, were men chauvenistic and old-fashioned in their ways during that time? Did the returning soldiers from the war dislike the thought of their wives playing baseball, and forced them to come home? I'd appreciate any help on this.
