Hi, Jared,

Many on the list will be of more help than I but just for starters. If your 
grandfather was a second class he would have been a bosn's mate 2/C. A 
coxswain by definition was a 3/C. His rate and the mention of San Diego may 
have indicated he was in the amphibs and small boats. Do you have his 
discharge papers? They would give you a great deal of infomation. Wish you 
success in your quest.
