It was a WW1 song and according to Brewer's isinseperably associated with
that
War. It was composed by Jack Judge and the words by H J Williams, and was
composed in 1912.
Tipperary is a place in Ireland. and I suppose it relates to one of
Britain's futile military attemps to subjugate
that awkward place.

The words are--

It's a long way to Tipperary.
It's a long wat to go:
It's a long way to Tipperary,
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square,
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there!
