Now a Web site (www.nationalgeographic.com/pearlharbor) from the National Geographic Society offers a chance to explore the battle through maps, photographs, eyewitness accounts and timelines. There is also a section where people can record their memories or post queries. History is in the details. Japanese bombers easily destroyed the planes that were clustered for protection from saboteurs. The commander of the U.S.S. Nevada, trying for the safety of the open sea, beached the ship so it would not block the harbor if it sank. On Dec. 8, 32 men were freed from the hull of the U.S.S. Oklahoma, but on the U.S.S. West Virginia, moored just behind, some sailors survived undetected in a sealed compartment until their air gave out on Dec. 23.
