Memories of World War II

The living memories of the generation that experienced World War II are
slipping into history.

At the same time, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of that
generation are growing up
without any real sense of what life was like during the war -- on the
battlefronts and on the home
front.

CNN.com invites our readers who lived through World War II to submit
their personal remembrances
of the war years. Your written accounts will become part of an archive
of World War II memories.

Tell us in your own words what the war years mean to you. Entries from
all over are welcome.

It is important, of course, to remember the sacrifices of the young men
and women who fought and
died.

But later generations should also know about the laughter and the tears
on the home front, about the
air raid shelters, gasoline and food rationing, travel restrictions,
wage and price controls, forced
displacements, about the value of radio broadcasts, newspaper reports,
writing letters and
readjusting to civilian life.

We also are interested if you would like to share with us your
memorabilia -- photographs, movies,
tape recordings, pamphlets, posters, telegrams, ration books, unit
patches, letters to loved ones --
anything that can be reproduced photographically or electronically.

Send us a brief description of your materials along with your stories
and we will let you know
whether we can include them on the Web site.

We expect to launch the site in April 2001 and add to it through
December, 2001.
