I am yet another inquisitive mind trying to find out information about
the second world war. Specifically I am writing a paper about Winston
Churchill's June 18, 1940 speech "Their Finest Hour". The paper is
focusing on if this speech fit the situation. Does anybody have any
information about what it was like to live in 1940 at the begining of
the war. Also your opinion about this speech ad how effective it was
in reassuring the world that England wasn't to be defeated. I would
love to hear about soeone's experiences during this time!
From your experience or just your opinion was there a great
awareness of social class or political parties that perhaps prevented
the feeling of a unified England? I was wondering if this might be
true because this speech really seems to be attempting to get beyond
differences and inspire everyone. ( I gather this from when towards
the beginning of his speech he speaks of how thise shouldn't be a time
of recrimination and inqiusition in the House of Commons as to who was
at fault for not beig adequately prepared for the war). What was
everyday life like? were people becoming panicked? How were the lives
of young people effected? Im currently looking all this up in books
but it would be amazing to hear a first-person account.
Also on a side note Im interested in communication technologies of
this time and how they were used in every day life. Like if most
people got their news on the radio or from the newspaper. Was it more
common to talk on the phone or to write letters if you just wanted to
say "Hi". Which was more formal?
