The Japanese were taught to accept only victory and keep goign with every last ounce of energy they had. For some kids...fanatical is not an expanded enough explanation. When the Japanese did surrender the Emperer had to go on the Radio (or Television) and tell the people it was acceptable not to commit suicide when they did surrender. For the Japanese to lose was everything - because they would have lost their honor. To the Japanese "Honor" is everything. The Japanese did not quit because it was not in them to quit. They could not bring themselves to accept that as an acceptable end. The bomb just made it impossible for them to continue. I do agree with you Tim - it had to be done. As an American I also think about the fact the we are the only country who ever has used this bomb, and I hope we never see it used again. Lise Hogan San Antonio, Tx - USA
