Inflation was very great. It took thousands of Marks to purchase a postage
stamp and a loaf of bread. Many young people could not get jobs. One of my
friends who lived in Germany during this time said that Hitler was a favorite
of her mother because he gave her son's jobs with his policies. She was
wondering what to give her mother for a birthday present and decided on a
large picture of Hitler in a frame. Even at the end of the war after all the
terrible things he had done were known she and her mother hid the picture
because they could not bring themselves to destroy it. Mary E. Haas
