My mother used to save the slivers of soap that were left when a bar was almost gone. She put these into a jar with a bit of water. The water melted the soap, and we used the liquid for shampoo. We didn't have hair dryers either, and when I got my hair washed (which was once a week or so) I had to either sit outside in the sun or turn the oven on and hang my head over the oven door to let my hair dry.
