That sounds a bit like asafoetida - which certainly
has a foetid smell and so would be used for *some*
medicinal purpose.

Have you noticed that ALL those old remedies were
strong smelling/tasting?  I live in Royal Leamington
Spa and outside the Pump Rooms is a fountain where
there is a constant supply of the medicinal waters
that Queen Victoria used to bathe in.  Salty! and
now generally thought to have no good effect on
the body whatever....
