ELDERS <ELDERS@sjuvm.stjohns.edu> When we arrived in the UK, soon after the end of WW II, rationing was still at it's height. Our family, like most Poles are predominently meat rather than veg. or sweet eateres and we were hit particularly hard by meat rationing. Additionally at that time you must understand our language skills in English were minimal. One day walking along the high streat we saw mince meat pies for sale. In her joy mother spent all available money on those, at home we sat down, salivating in anticipation, untill the first bite which revealed a sickeningly sweet taste. In disappointment and frustration the lot entered the bin!!!! A similar experience happened some time later, when Welsh rabbits were advertised in a cafe. All my pocket money went in purchasing it. My disgust on tasting cheese on toast was only exceeded by my disgust with myself when the waitress pointed out thet these were Welsh rarebits not rabbits. Oh, for linguistic simplicity! After a good breakfast of non rationed bacon, Dowidzenia. Jan Mokrzycki.
