Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper. In South Dakota where I lived
throughout my childhood, we called our noon meal "dinner" and our evening
meal "supper." Indeed, our largest meal of the day was at noon. I walked
home from school and my father, the blacksmith, walked home also, for this
noon meal. Our supper was on the table at 5:30 or 6:00 in the evening and
was much lighter than our noon meal. One would be criticized in Omaha,
should you call the noon meal anything but lunch.
