Forced to come to the planet NOCTURIA by the Nocturian infiltrators from the last mission, Captain Rharn Alcedo is forced to answer to his/her family.

Once the STONEHENGE arrives at NOCTURIA the Nocturians of the clan Alcedo make a plea for help: a whole generation of hatchlings has died; and the Nocturians cannot trace any reason. A second generation is extremely sick and the Nocturians fear that if they cannot save their young they will face extinction.

The crew learns that Rharn Alcedo is not completely gender-neutral like the rest of his/her species; but she leans towards the female gender. She has a male counterpart named T’nnent from the clan Pleo. Upon searching the hatchery, the medical team finds that the space has been poisoned by trace amounts of radiation – enough to affect infants but not fully grown adults. They reveal that all hatchlings are starting to gain gendered attributes – the Nocturian race as a whole is undergoing a genetic evolution. The clan Pleo feels that gendered evolution is sacrilegious to their culture and has sworn to destroy every hatchling with gendered characteristics to preserve their identity as a gender-neutral race.

The medical team and the Alcedo citadel is attacked; the CMO is taken hostage and the away team ends up going underground to escape the citadel. They make an adurous journey across the inhospitable Bogozoh plain to reach the Pleo citadel so they can uncover proof of the Pleo’s treachery to the rest of the planet. They find, on their journey, that the Pleo are conducting dangerous scientific experiments in the plain, which lead to the death of aSec/Tac officer Llandwyn Orla. The Pleo plan to use their weapons to control any faction which disagrees with them.

Captain Alcedo. Commander Aspinall, Lieutenant Phia, Enisgn Vort and Cadet Karn infiltrate the Pleo citadel through centuries-old burial passages; while Lieutenant Jos finds T’nnent awaiting execution in a Pleo dungeon. The intrepid away team manages to breach Pleo security from the inside and rescue T’nnent. The truth is brought to the Nocturian public, where the reception is highly divided. Some hail the Pleo as cultural heros while others see them as murderers. The STONEHENGE leaves the NOCTURIANS to argue out their own solution to their evolutionary problem while leaving them with enough serum to inoculate the next several generations of hatchlings from radiation poisoning.
