Station Log
Filed By: Lt Cdr Kathryn MacNeil MD, Executive Officer
Mission Title: "Be Careful What you Wish For"
Mission Start Date: 2.80515
Mission End Date: 2.80713
The USS COMMENDATION had returned from border patrol duty towing the wreckage of the intrepid class starship, USS TUSCACORA and a civilian trade vessel, SS INSHALLAH. Apparently, the COMMENDATION had received a distress call from the TUSCACORA and rushed to their aid. The COMMENDATION reported an explosion had occurred causing both ships to suffer irreparable damages and sustain high casualty rates.
From the reports of the intrepid class vessel’s survivors, we discovered the TUSCACORA had responded to a distress beacon set by the INSHALLAH and upon arrival at the sight, the explosion took place. Initial sweep of the area by the COMMENDATION revealed traces of a subspace mine, whose origins were unknown at the time.
Investigation conducted by the GATEWAY science and engineering teams led by Lt. JG Thomas Varn on the debris had revealed very interesting results. Traces of residue of a subspace mine were found on the TUSCACORA’s hull plate, which concluded that the starship’s impact with the mine led to the explosion. But what made the result more interesting was that the mine’s quantum signature did not match that of our dimension.
While the investigation was going on, the promenade was plunged into a chaotic situation caused by the appearance of an unknown individual, who called himself Ihcalam, a dark lord and the alternate version of our MCO, F. Col Hunter Williams in the middle of a show conducted by an entertainment company. At first everyone thought the dark lord was part of the act until he took away Lt. Trella Palandora’s oral cavity and shrunk a civilian doctor, Cade Foster to the size of a mouse. The lord’s actions caused a wide-spread panic amongst the civilian population, resulting in a stampede where many ended up injured.
Around the same time, an engineering team was alerted to a feedback surge in the holomatrix of the holodeck, where Lt. Varn was running a flight simulation. Upon arrival at the holodeck, they encountered the CSciO, his body badly burnt beyond recognition and wings missing. He was immediately transported to sickbay where he underwent surgery immediately.
We found out much later that an unknown Bajoran man broke into the holodeck and sabotaged the system, resulting in the holodeck going through a cycle of random programs from the database until it stopped at the scene of a volcano. The culprit escaped leaving Varn to die. Where the Bajoran went was anyone’s guess and security hoped to find and capture him.
However it was only towards the end of the mission, when we discovered that a switch had taken place between Lt. Varn and his alternate, Thomas Varn.
Station sensors were picking up micro anomalies in the vicinity. Commander Daisy Davidson, after making some adjustments in Stellar Cartography, enabled sensors to detect an unknown vessel, positioned in close proximity to the station. Fighters, led by our new FSC, Lt. Cochrane Stephens were sent out to secure the ship. After a brief skirmish, we managed to lock the vessel with a tractor beam.
When the unknown ship hailed us, we were shocked to discover the CO shared an exact physical resemblance to Commander Davidson, which made all of us assume at the time that she was a clone created by the Dominion. The only difference was the double introduced herself as Captain Daisy Byrne. Matters were made worse when the rogue ship, which we found much later was designated BFOV SHIV, sent out a surge that forced the tractor beam to disengage, thereby allowing the vessel to jump to warp.
We discovered from the scans of the SHIV that the quantum signature indicated its origins to be from another universe, making us suspect a connection between them and the TUSCACORA’s destruction.
The USS COMMENDATION and the USS CHANTICO set off on a mission to retrieve the rogue ship. We followed the vessel’s warp trail to the Lantar nebula, a sector heavily patrolled by Dominion forces.
Aware that the USS MATACO was conducting operations in that region, the COMMENDATION contacted the fleet flagship to appraise them of the taskforce’s mission prior to arrival at our destination. From the conversation between Captain Anaqueen Spankryz, CO of the COMMENDATION and Commodore Kenji Necarra, fleet commander and CO of the MATACO, we gathered the following information. The MATACO battled Dominion forces in the vicinity of the nebula and had lost their stardrive in the process. The galaxy class dreadnaught’s saucer section then made its way to the nebula and hid.
After the CHANTICO and the COMMENDATION arrived at the nebula, all three starships began searching for the SHIV. The conditions in the nebula made it difficult to pinpoint the location of the rogue vessel, which was doing an excellent job hiding from our sensors. It took a while before Lt. Jake Crichton had come up with the idea to use the deflector shield of the CHANTICO to successfully draw out the renegade out into the open.
Once the ship became visible on sensors, the taskforce engaged the SHIV in battle. We were able to defeat the rogue when Lt. Crichton and Lt. Cmdr. Eishnala Kor devised a way to disable the rogue vessel’s shield emitters. After the shields were down, all life forms on the ship were transported to the COMMENDATION.
Unfortunately our problems didn’t end there, when long-range sensors detected an incoming Dominion fleet headed our way. With the COMMENDATION and CHANTICO towing the MATACO and the SHIV respectively, we jumped to warp, barely escaping an unwinnable battle. One of the Dominion vessels followed us into warp but the MATACO fought back vigorously, crippling the enemy ship, which was forced to withdraw from battle. Another vessel continued to follow us, but it did not attack and only broke off our tail when approaching Federation space.
Lt. Cmdr. H.H. Drake confirmed the crew of the SHIV originated from another universe, except for one and it was at that time we discovered the switch made between the two Thomas Varns. We also found out that a large number of the rogue crew were alternate versions of ourselves.
After we returned to the GATEWAY, the SHIV crew was transported from the COMMENDATION to the station’s brig. However a problem with transporters, which we believe could have been a sabotage, resulted in some of the crew landing in another location of the station. Most of them were eventually tracked down and apprehended by security.
I also received reports from sickbay that Lt. Varn, while a prisoner on the SHIV, was tortured and drugged by Captain Byrne and my alternate, Doctor Kathryn MacNeil.
Jake Crichton, alternate of our Chief Engineer, had his sentence reduced for helping save Lt. Crichton and Lt. Stephens from a crisis involving the SHIV. During inspection of the ship, Crichton and Stephens had discovered it was booby trapped. The ship’s systems started to fail. Alternate Jake Crichton was recalled to assist in the situation. At the end of the crisis, Crichton and Stephens managed to be transported to safety but the SHIV was badly crippled with hull breaches all over the vessel and was currently undergoing repairs in a secure docking bay.
While in prison, Captain Byrne and an unknown prisoner were killed by the dark lord, their bodies mutilated and transported for display in the promenade.
The prisoners were currently debriefed by Starfleet Command and any charges against them were made depending on their level of involvement in the crimes against the Federation. Some of the alternates could be sent to prison while others were freed, possibly on probation after it was determined they had no part in Captain Byrne’s crimes.
