As is often the case when groups of men and women are gathered in teams, disagreements occur. It is the responsibility of the Judge Advocate General's Corps to settle any and all arguments between two officers in an impartial manner.

While most cases can be handled by a fleet's Commanding Officer, there are certain instances where a third party is necessary to resolve matters. Usually working within the confines of Starfleet Command, the JAG Corps is also responsible for upholding the rules and regulations of the fleet. As such, he or she is the sole arbiter of court martial proceedings.

After all facts are presented the Judge Advocate may decide to drop the charges, remove the officer from active duty, or dismiss the officer from Starfleet. Finally, all complaints and reprimands regarding officers of Starfleet Command and fleet commands should be directed through the office of the Judge Advocate General.

• Advising Starfleet commanders about legal issues ranging from interpretation and application of statutes and regulations (Including the Prime Directive), and military justice matters.

• Providing legal assistance to members of Starfleet and their dependents.

• Providing advice and information about admiralty and interplanetary law.
