With the rest of the frigate fleet aging,Starfleet started commissioning development projects for new classes of ship. The first of these is the Vanguard class Assault Frigate. Vanguiard is a tactical vessel designed to secure Federation interests across the galaxy, and is being built to replace the aging Akira class ships over the next 15 years. Vanguard classed ships are built to incorporate modest Marine contingents on borard or can be equipped to carry a small fighter wing instead.
