GENERAL NOTES

The Sovereign class is still Starfleet's premier and most reliable Exploration ship. When first conceived the Sovereign class was intended to carry out the same mission profile as the Ambassador and the Galaxy classes, with introduction coming late in the Galaxy class's life cycle. As new threats immerged in the mid-24th century, such as the return of the Romulan Empire and the Borg, the Sovereign class design was update to incorporate elements of a battleship, and lessening of the diplomatic and exploration roles. After the first Borg invasion the Sovereign class was rushed into service far earlier then planned. This allowed the class to play a pivotal role in the Dominion War and Reman incident. Following these roles, the Sovereign was returned to her duties as an exploration starship. They saw front line service during the 7th war, and a number of them were lost. The class was removed from service following the war, until 2418 following a class-wide refit to incorporate new techjnologies such as transwarp drive. The Sovereign Class shares its space frame with the Sanctity class Medical ship, as the design has proven extremely reliable. Baring any major technological leaps forward, Starfleet Engineering has hopes that this class can remain in service for another 50 years before forced retirement, or reconfigurement to a lesser role.
