SANCTITY-CLASS MEDICAL SUPPORT VESSEL

Technical Specifications, Revision 01
Starfleet Engineering, SB4, Orbiting Mars

GENERAL NOTES

With the ageing Horizon-class ships reaching the end of their useful life, designers at Starfleet Engineering began work on a replacement class, one that would continue and expand the vital role played by Starfleet's Medical Vessels. After months of intense discussion between Starfleet Engineering and Starfleet Medical, the Sanctity-class Starship was born. Larger than her predecessor, with more than three times the number of personnel, the Sanctity-class ship was primarily designed not only to fulfill the old Horizon-class' mission profile as both a mobile medical center and a rescue/transport vessel during emergency or wartime situations, but a much larger role too. Equipped with the latest in medical research and analysis technology, the Sanctity-class vessel can also function as a short term mobile medical research platform. Her expanded mission profile might include dealing with epidemics or other virulent outbreaks on outlying Federation colonies, or extended missions
deep into unknown space, researching medical phenomena on foreign worlds.

Based on the old Sovereign-class configuration, the Sanctity-class hulls have a slightly elongated saucer section above a narrow secondary hull. In accordance with the design philosophy of the old Horizon-class, the Sanctity-class vessels are equipped with the latest in shielding technology but little in the way of offensive weaponry. Unlike the Horizon-class ships, however, the new Sanctity-class vessels are transwarp capable, allowing them to rapidly depart from any crisis situation. Also in contrast with the Horizon-class ships, the Sanctity-class vessels' saucer section cannot separate from the secondary hull.

The standard crew complement of the Sanctity-class vessel is 630, most of which is made up of medical personnel. In addition the Sanctity-class vessels can accommodate 550 patients. However, in emergency situations, this number can be increased to a maximum of 850 with all the ships' non-essential areas converted into triage wards.

A variation of the standard warp-capable runabout, this version has a specialized medical module in place of the usual cargo module. The medical module contains a wide array of emergency medical supplies and equipment, allowing the runabout to function as an ambulance, transporting sick and injured to and from the ship when circumstances do not allow for the use of transporters, or as a supplement to them.
