RAPIER-CLASS DEFENSIVE FIGHTER
Technical Specifications, Revision 02
Starfleet Corps of Engineering
| GENERAL NOTES * Design Engineers found that the use of transporter technology on this class would seriously decline the amount of power allocated to the weapons and shields. It was therefore decided to incorporate an Ejection Pod system, to keep the Pilot and RIO alive until a larger vessel could retrieve them. The EP Unit would be capable of surviving a planetary entry, as well as prolonged exposure to the depths of space. A limited use Reaction Control Thruster was included on the top of the canopy to allow the Pilot to control a landing, or escape the fighters destructive blast. An Emergency beacon was used, to allow the rescue ship to locate and retrieve survivors in the event that Communications with outside forces were cut off. Engineers are working on possible modifications to the EP Unit, to allow it to survive prolonged exposure to inhospitable atmospheric environments. ** The use of tractor beams was intended for use when the fighter needed to push itself away from harm. The repulser beam is capable of locking onto a photon torpedo, and pushing it away from the ship. The beam requires power being diverted from shields to work, leaving the ship vulnerable to enemy fire. Engineers are further studying weather the Repulser beam should be included in further ships, or if the emitters should be replaced with a simple tractor system. *** It was theorized, that in the event of shield failure, the Fighter could sustain 2 direct hits from enemy fire without causing catastrophic damage, and allowing the pilot to re-energize the shields, or return to the safe confines of the carrier vessel
