GENERAL NOTES

Given the advancements in engineering, the incorporation of transwarp Drive in Starfleet, it was decided to phase out the Oberth class ships in early 2410 as Starfleet Command has requested that a new Scout type ship would be created. However,in 2423 Starfleet negated that decision in favor of an entire class upgrade. It was decided that upgrading ships that were still spaceworthy to ba able to function effectively for another 50 years or more, would save resources that could be better spent in a time of war on Combat ships.

A proposal was drawn up and contracts established that 3 of Starfleet's smaller shipyards while not suited for Starship construction had the capability to do a refit. Three ships at a time would be pulled from the fleet, and sent to these yards for the upgrades.

Included in the upgrades were provisions for more crew, a transwarp drive, better defensive systems, and a phased cloaking device. The long dormant torpedo launchers would be utelized for launching sensor probes into areas where the ship could not go. The stripped out phaser banks would be used to mount a civilian issue laser, used to extract core samples from spacial bodies or other such tasks.

The 2nd generation Oberth's best line of defense is still its impressive shields and speed. This ship is not designed for a combat role, But can effectively be used for Recon in enemy territory due to its cloaking technology.
