| GENERAL NOTES
With the success of the Legend Class progect, Starfleet ordered design and prototype of the Excalibur, A larger, beefier version of the Legend class Space Frame. The purpose of this ship was to be extended Exploration missions, with the option of a multi-generational starship. Many in spacial research have the opinion that true exploration is not grabbing a quick scan of a star system while warping by on your way to somewhere more exciting, but a slow progression throuhg unknown space, looking under every rock so to speak.
With this goal in mind, Starfleet Engineering took a true and tried design that had just launched the final vessel of her first production run, and convert the design for this use, much like what was done for the Akira to Century classes. This ship would include almost every scientific scanner currently known, with multiple sensor arrays, as well as enough crew space to allow for families to form, grow, and change while on extended missions.
With the massive amounts of research equipment incorporated into the design, Excalibur also incorporates an impressive weapons array to defend itself in hostile sectors. The experiences of the USS Discovery while exploring the Beta Quadrant reinforced this idea, as the small Discovery was under-armed to deal with the peoples it encountered. Most of the weapons ports are retractable into the hull so that the ship doesnt come across as a Battle Cruiser, which at over 900 meters long, is a logical impression to hold.
Even with a few setbacks in design, most notably the failure of the USS Merlin's Shakedown cruise, as more was learned, problems were redesigned, and it is expected that Excalibur and her sister-ships will be the front runners of Starfleet Exploration for the next century.
