| GENERAL NOTES In 2423 a new Dominion Offinsive broke out in the Gamma Quadrant. Dominion forces were as tough if not more so than any previous encounter, and the Fleet had not yet recovered from past engagements, or the advent of ship-board transwarp drives in the fleet. In the first battle of Gateway, One of two Midway class Carriers were lost. Starfleet had already ramped their ship building facilities to war time levels, but it would be a matter of years before any signifigant force increases would be seen. Given that Starfleet Command had to use existing ships to fight the new war, Admiral Nathan Halloway, head of starfleet engineering, ordered new options be presented. The Daring sub-class of the Hornet was one of those options. Given the time it takes to build a full size carrier, it was decided to use Hornet class transports, construct a fighter carrier container that would fit with these ships, and deploy them as light carriers. The fighter container would carry all flight ops equipment. Weapons, fuel, parts and repair bays would all be located here, while the crews needed to operate the fighters would be housed on the main vessel. This had the advantage of allowing the main vessel to dump the flight ops container in the case that a quick getaway were needed, or in a catastrophic failure without losing the entire crew for the fighters. Time tables for Daring class state that within 6 months, Shipyards could have 6 Light Carriers in service, whereas a Midway class Carrier takes a minimum of 2-3 years to build a single ship. Admiral Halloway approved the design, and ordered 12 containers be constructed initially. For this subclass, a Maximum of 1 crewed container is permitted. Additional containers can be authorized for cargo for mission specific requirements.
