Experiment Report for the Eratosthenes Project on http://youth.net/ School Name: Richmond HS School Location: Richmond, IN Email Address: scotth@rcs.k12.in.us Experimenter: Lukus, Devon, John D. Latitude 39 45 N Longitude: 84 51 W Distance to Equator: 2691.409 mi* Measured shadow angle in degrees: 38.49437335 Calculated Earth circumference: 25,170.10041 mi. Comments: * On Friday, the equinox, our little town was completely cloud-covered. On Monday (3/22), it was bright and sunny, so we took our measurements then. We calculated it had been 2 days since the equinox and the sun travels roughly .77 degrees of latitude north in that time. So, we recalculated our distance to that point .77 degrees north of the equator (where the sun would shine directly down a well)- and based our circumference on that distance.
