Eratosthenes Experiment: Analysis of September 2003 data

The purpose here is to present a simple and straightforward analysis of
the shadow angle measurements reported by students from 16 schools from
different parts of the world. As we see from Figures 1 and 2 in the attached
Microsoft PowerPoint file, the reported shadow lengths (x) deviate
significantly from the theoretical shadow lengths. The errors in the shadow
length measurements are summarized in Table 1 of the attached Microsoft Word
document.

Once again, as with the measurements reported during earlier equinoxes,
we observe both positive and negative deviations from the theoretical shadow
lengths. Again, the deviations are too large to be attributed entirely to
carelessness on the part of the students (some of them were elementary
school students) or genuine difficulties in the measurements of the shadow
lengths. Further discussion of the significance of such measured deviations
may be found in the documents posted in March 2003 and September 2003.
