TITLE: Timeline AUTHOR: Lucinda Kelly Liedman, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, AZ GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 5-8; social studies, history, geography OVERVIEW: It is difficult for the adolescent to appreciate the importance of studying the past; in order to help make timelines interesting it helps to personalize the technique. PURPOSE: To clarify the meaning of the Timeline and the concept of B.C. numeration. OBJECTIVES: 1. To clarify the concept of the Timeline. 2. To increase the teacher's knowledge of student's personal lives. 3. To reinforce the concept of selection of data in historical reporting. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: 3 ft. lengths of white paper (four sheets of typing paper taped together), pencils (lead and colored), ruler ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Have students draw a horizontal line on a 3 1/2 ft. roll of paper 2" up from the bottom edge. Beginning 12" in from the left margin mark as BIRTHDATE. Mark the line at equal intervals: 1 1/2" equals one year. 2. Students place above the line major personal events that have made up their history beginning with birth. They place above their personal history any major world events that have occurred. 3. Then to understand B.C. or B.T. (before them) have the students mark in the date of parent's marriage and any other major events in their families that occurred before their births.
