CECmisc.67 TITLE: THE WALKER SOCIAL SKILLS CURRICULUM AUTHOR: Bill Zook: Pine Hills School; Miles City, MT. GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for grades 5+ OVERVIEW: To equip students for co-existence and societal function from the viewpoint that delinquent youth are disadvantaged, if not even handicapped. Due to the limited exposure time to these students, this program appears well structured such that the time needed can be adapted to nearly any student. It is presumed that social competence is a requisite in adjustment and transition processes. OBJECTIVES: 1. Improve social competence of delinquent youth within peer-, adult-, and self-related domains. 2. Preparing such students for the behavioral demands and expectations of social agents within all environs, now and later. 3. Teaching skills involved in developing social support networks and friendships. 4. Teaching ways to analyze social situations and adjusting to them. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Using the Walker ACCESS Program: 1. Screen for competence and eventual placement in program. 2. Review previously learned skill(s). 3. Instruct new skill. 4. Illustrate negative skill example (non-example). 5. Identification of critical skill features. 6. Central message. 7. Discrimination practice. 8. Situational role play. 9. Application discussion. 10. Student contract. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: Behavioral Management: The report is that the ACCESS program is intrinsically motivating. It is the teachers' skill that can encourage this interest. Much emphasis is placed on the opportunities for teachers' praise of students.
