TITLE: SKILL GROWTH AUTHOR: SHERMAYNE BOETHIN, MT. VERNON, OR GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: K-1 READINESS OVERVIEW: STUDENTS ARE NOT AS PREPARED FOR SCHOOL AS THEY OR THEIR PARENTS THINK THEY ARE. MANY ARE READY TO TACKLE SKILLS MUCH TO HARD FOR THEM. OTHERS ARE AFRAID TO ADMIT THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE A SKILL MASTERED. PURPOSE: TO HELP STUDENTS REALIZE THAT EVERYONE DEVELOPS SKILLS AT THEIR OWN SPEED. OBJECTIVES: 1) STUDENTS WILL IDENTIFY 10 SKILLS THEY HAVE MASTERED. 2) STUDENTS WILL IDENTIFY 2 SKILLS THAT THEY WISH TO WORK ON. 3) STUDENTS WILL STATE THAT NOT EVERYONE LEARNS AT THE SAME SPEED. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: CHILDREN'S BOOK, LEO THE LATE BLOOMER, LARGE SHEET OF PAPER FOR BRAINSTORMING, NAME TAGS OR PICTURES FOR EACH STUDENT ON THE BULLETIN BOARD, PAPER FOR CHILDREN'S LISTS, AWARDS FOR STUDENT'S ACHIEVEMENTS. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1) READ CHILDREN'S BOOK, LEO THE LATE BLOOMER 2) AS A CLASS, BRAINSTORM ALL THE SKILLS THEY CAN THINK OF 3) ASK CHILDREN, WITH ADULT HELP, TO LIST THOSE SKILLS THAT THEY CAN DO. PUT THESE LISTS ON A BULLETIN BOARD NEXT TO EACH CHILD'S NAME OR PICTURE 4) ALSO HAVE STUDENTS DICTATE WHAT 2 SKILLS THEY WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON. PLACE THESE SOMEWHERE THE STUDENT AND TEACHER CAN SEE THEM. ATTACH AN AWARD TO THIS SO THAT WHEN THE SKILL IS ACHIEVED THE STUDENT MAY TAKE THE AWARD HOME. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: STUDENTS NEED TO FEEL THAT WHAT THEY CAN DO IS OK. THEY ALSO NEED TO KNOW THAT THERE IS A LOT OUT THERE TO LEARN AND THEY WILL LEARN IT AT THEIR OWN SPEED.
