TITLE:    JEOPARDY REVIEW

GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT:       3-5

OVERVIEW:  Many students at the elementary level have difficulty in
retaining learned material.  They may retain it for a period of time and
then frequently it is forgotten.

PURPOSE:  This activity is designed to provide a continuous review of
material (in all subject areas) throughout the year.

OBJECTIVES:  Students will be able to:
     1.  Answer comprehensive questions in all subject areas, including
topics previously covered.

      2.  Write questions in all subject areas.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS:  chalkboard, chalk, file box of questions, tape of
Jeopardy theme music

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
      1.  Prior to the lesson the teacher designs the chalkboard to look
similar to the gameboard on the TV game show "Jeopardy".  The board
should include one column for each subject area (usually six) and various
amounts of money under that column heading ($100 - $500).

       2.  The class is then divided into two teams.  The first person on the
first team selects any subject area and states the money amount.

       3.  A file box of questions is kept for all subject areas and various
amounts of money (harder questions are worth more money).  So, if a
student selects "Science for $200" the teacher draws a question from the
Science - $200 slot. After the student answers the question the square on
the chalkboard is erased.  If the student does not know the answer, the
next player on the other team has the option to answer the question or
choose his/her own question. The questions in the box have previously
been written by the students (usually at the end of units) and approved by
the teacher.

       4.  The game continues until the board is cleared and each team has a
final sum of money.  Then it is time for Final Jeopardy.  One question is
read and, cooperatively, each team must agree on an answer and how much
money to wager.

       5.  The team with the most money after Final Jeopardy wins.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:
       1.  Assure students that when playing Jeopardy everybody is a winner
because they all contributed to the success of the game.

       2.  This particular game of Jeopardy is designed as a fun way to tie
together, reinforce, and review previous learning.
