CEClang.89 TITLE: INDEX SKILLS AUTHOR: Cliff Long, Youth Residence Hall; Goddard, KS GRADE LEVEL: 5th - 12th ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Select 100 words/terms from the index four or more texts that are used in your classroom. As the words/terms are selected the text(s) and page number(s) the word/term can be found on are noted. (The computer can be used to manipulate the number in use for a particular lesson.) The words/terms should be listed in random, non-alphabetical order so all texts are represented. As the words/terms are prepared for use the reference notes are deleted from the list to be copied for student use. A list of 10-20 will provide practice for an individual. For a student with minimal skills the instructions are to look up the words in the indexes of the books and tell what page of what text each word can be found on. A student with greater abilities is asked to add the sentence that the word/term is used in to the above information. A list of 50-100 can be used for a group of 5-6 students to work on. They are instructed that it is a group project and that they will be graded on the results of their search, their individual efforts, and their cooperation with the other members of the group. (As a group project this helps to teach social skills, as well as index and writing skills.) (EXAMPLE OF LIST THAT MIGHT BE HANDED OUT.)
